Graduated from the Moscow State University of International Relations (MGIMO), International Economic Relations Faculty in 1983. Between 1983 and 1988 he worked in different positions in the International Division of the National Bank of Hungary. In 1988-89 he was Head of Correspondent Banking at Budapest Bank, Budapest, in 1989-93 Head of the International Division, at Inter-Europa Bank, Budapest (member of the SanPaolo–IMI Group). In 1993-96 worked as Secretary General of the Clearing Bank Association, based in Brussels. The main task in this position was to supervise an EU-financed project on the creation of a mcros-border ECU (later EUR) clearing system, initiate the launch of the system and act as clearing manager.
Since 1996 Istvan has been the Secretary General of the Banking Association for Central and Eastern Europe. Between 1996 and 1998 he was based in Brussels and in 1998 moved back to Budapest. He supervises BACEE’s analytical work, event management activities and acts as the Association’s Chief Analyst. He is Visiting Professor at Financial University, Moscow and regularly holds trainings on Bank Analysis, Basel III and IV, IFRS, Corporate Governance, GDPR, Risk management in English and Russian in Budapest and abroad. His seminars have been attended by over 2,000 participants from 20 countries.
Istvan is married with 2 children and speaks Hungarian, English, French and Russian.
