Origins and Evolution of Materials Science in Humans

Pottery represents the first instance where humans utilized natural substances to create a novel composite material according to their will, inaugurating a new era of harnessing and transforming nature—an epoch-making milestone of great significance.

China possesses a unique, continuous pottery development history spanning over ten thousand years, forming an integrated yet diversely evolving Chinese pottery cultural system.

Guilin, Guangxi is currently the city with the most discoveries of ten-thousand-year-old pottery specimens in China. Three archaeological sites - Dayan, Zengpiyan, and Miaoyan - have yielded pottery dating back over ten thousand years, making it an important origin point of Chinese pottery composites and earning it the title of “Ten-Thousand-Year Wisdom Sanctuary.”

This forum marks the first sub-forum integrating cultural heritage archaeology with technology since the inaugural World Materials Congress in 2023, serving as a significant component of the third Congress. Centered on the theme “The Origin and Evolution of Human Materials Science,” it will focus on archaeological discoveries and multidisciplinary research concerning the origin and development of human pottery, porcelain, glassware, and other materials. The event will debut scientific analysis results of ten-thousand-year-old pottery (including clay and pottery vessels) unearthed from the Dayan site in Lingui, Guilin, Guangxi, display physical specimens of ancient pottery discovered at three cave sites—Dayan, Zengpiyan, and Miaoyan in Guilin, and feature field visits to experimental scenarios replicating the invention and creation of pottery by ancient inhabitants of Dayan and Zengpiyan. These activities aim to highlight the innovative capabilities of prehistoric humans from the landscape of Guilin ten millennia ago, leveraging this enduring wisdom to empower the development of new materials, products, and technologies both in China and globally.
